Liverpool’s relentless pursuit of Premier League glory continues this weekend as they prepare to face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield. In a season of twists and transitions, the Reds, under new manager Arne Slot, aim to maintain their lead at the summit. Meanwhile, Wolves, buoyed by the arrival of Vítor Pereira, arrive with renewed confidence and a clear game plan. In a recent episode of Rival Recon on Anfield Index, Hari Sethi sat down with Dave Azzopardi of the Talking Wolves podcast to discuss Wolves’ turbulent season, the managerial changes, and the upcoming clash.
Wolves’ campaign has been anything but smooth. Reflecting on Gary O’Neil’s dismissal, Azzopardi admitted, “The sacking was bound to happen. He held on to that job a lot longer than he probably should have.” The team’s lack of direction and uninspiring performances ultimately forced the club’s hand. O’Neil’s tenure ended amidst poor results, dressing-room discontent, and an incident involving João Gomes after the Ipswich defeat that became a tipping point.
The club’s decision to appoint Pereira raised eyebrows, with Azzopardi acknowledging the fans’ mixed reactions: “It was an indication we were once again leaning on Jorge Mendes.” Pereira’s track record as a footballing journeyman was met with scepticism, but results have started to shift perceptions.
Since Pereira’s arrival, Wolves have adopted a more structured and pragmatic style. Azzopardi highlighted Pereira’s tactical rigidity: “He’s very stubborn with the system. It’s always three or five at the back with two holding midfielders.” Defensive solidity has improved, largely thanks to the arrival of Emmanuel Agbadou. “He’s physical, brilliant in the air, and exactly what Wolves have needed,” said Azzopardi.
The midfield duo of João Gomes and André Almeida has also caught the eye. “These lads have stepped up massively,” Azzopardi noted, emphasising their role in protecting the defence and initiating counter-attacks. Pereira’s emphasis on discipline and structure has given Wolves a fighting chance in their relegation battle.
Wolves’ fortunes may hinge on Matheus Cunha’s performance. Azzopardi observed, “If Cunha turns up, he can be the star of the show. But he’s been hit and miss in the big games.” His free role allows him to exploit spaces left by Liverpool’s attacking full-backs, but consistency remains an issue.
Defensively, Toti Gomes has emerged as a surprise hero. “Every game he’s played under Pereira, we’ve kept a clean sheet,” Azzopardi revealed. His pace, physicality, and positional awareness will be crucial in nullifying Liverpool’s formidable attack.

Liverpool, despite enduring a frenetic fixture schedule, remain top of the Premier League. Slot’s men have shown resilience, but Wolves’ compact shape and counter-attacking threat pose a genuine test. Azzopardi warned, “If we can catch Liverpool on a bad day and execute on the counter, we might just get something out of this game.”
The battle down the flanks could be decisive. Wolves’ wing-backs, particularly Rayan Aït-Nouri, will need to be cautious against Mohamed Salah’s pace and movement. Pereira might opt for a more conservative approach, prioritising defensive solidity before seeking opportunities on the break.
With Wolves fighting for survival and Liverpool chasing the title, both teams have much at stake. Azzopardi concluded, “If we can go to Anfield and get something, Wolves fans will be ecstatic.” The odds favour Liverpool, but Wolves’ tactical discipline and improved defensive resilience mean the Reds must remain vigilant.
