How the LA Galaxy are (historically) in a different world this season

Fresh off their sixth title and tenth appearance in the MLS Cup Finals, the Los Angeles Galaxy had high hopes for this season. After a magical run, General Manager Will Kuntz pieced together their roster by adding talent during the winter and mid-season.

The salary cap affected many of the transactions this winter and cost the LA Galaxy to move on from stars like Dejan Joveljic and Marky Delgado. Between the new additions taking time to gel with the mainstays on the team and the slew of injuries (Pec, Paintsil, Puig, among others).

This season has historically been terrible for the reigning MLS Cup champions. Last week, they entered last week's rematch against Real Salt Lake with a 16-game winless streak, the longest of any team ever.

How the LA Galaxy were of a different world last season?

Just like this season, the Los Angeles Galaxy have a two-week break in early June. Their record was much better in 2024 than it is now.

Both the defense and offense were stronger last season, as well. The LA Galaxy allowed 25 goals while finding the back of the net 31 times.

The team moved on from veteran goalie Jonathan Bond to bring in John McCarthy. He played in all but two of the LA Galaxy's games last season. The 2024 MLS Cup champs went 19-6-7 with McCarthy in goal and 0-1-1 with the backup Novak Micovic.

Halfway through the season, the LA Galaxy had less losses than they did either wins or ties. Their third loss of the season did not happen until June 1st, 2024 when they dropped a 2-1 game on the road against the Chicago Fire.

Before that third loss, the LA Galaxy took a six-game unbeaten streak with them including four ties in a row during the month of May last season.

The LA Galaxy can only get better from here, right?!

Last year, the 2024 MLS Cup victors boasted four players on their roster with at least 10 goals. Only two have those four have taken the field this season for the LA Galaxy.

The 2024 MLS Newcomer of the Year winner, Gabriel Pec, scored the team's first goal of the 2025 MLS regular season. That came in the second game of the season. They have scored just 14 more as a team since.

Newcomer and forward Christian Ramirez has four to his credt this season. Marco Reus, who was added mid-summer last year, has added his two of his three goals in the month of May.

"I think more of the pieces are starting to come together and fit together through health and the guys developing in what we're trying to do. I think with that, I think some clarity in our play and things we're hoping to see are starting to come together. The guys overall have just been competing and fighting to try to get this result and continue to build off it."Greg Vanney, head coach of the LA Gaalxy

Against Real Salt Lake recently, first-year Galaxy player Lucas Sanabria recorded his first goal. His teammate, 18-year-old sensation Matheus Nascimento, was credited with the assist on the play.

Goalkeeper Novak Micovic earned his first career victory that game. He also logged his second clean sheet in his three-year tenure with the LA Galaxy.

Joseph Paintsil notched the team's second goal in their first win of the season thanks to a pass from Pec. It was the perfect blending of soccer for the LA Galaxy. The first full 90 minutes of excellent performances and a total team effort.

While it may not be enough to save their season, it could set them up to rebound next year like they did a season ago after missing the 2023 MLS Playoffs. Something that historically doesn't happen too often if you ae the Los Angeles Galaxy.
