Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been tipped to sell Wrexham, and FLW looks at how much the pair purchased the Welsh club for

Ambitious Welsh side Wrexham have enjoyed a meteoric, well-documented bankrolled rise following the purchase of the club by Hollywood pair Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in February 2021.

There were natural question marks when the duo first purchased Wrexham, then languishing in the National League, but a remarkable ascension up through the divisions has been inspired ever since.

The Red Dragons gained a long-awaited promotion back to the Football League as champions in the 2022/23 campaign. They then proceeded to finish second in their first season in League Two, and are now poised to do exactly the same behind league leaders Birmingham City this term following a mightily-impressive campaign.

Wrexham are in second place with just five games to play, and have won six of their last eight matches.

They are in a good place, there is no doubt about that. But just how much did Reynolds and McElhenny purchase the club for, and why have they been tipped to sell up sooner rather than later?

According to reports, just £2 million was required to complete the purchase of the then-National League ouftit back in 2021.

At the time, Wrexham were financially struggling amid the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had prevented supporters from attending matches. However, success both on and off-the-pitch has now helped to grow Wrexham's value exponentially following Reynolds and McElhenney's purchase.

Now, Wrexham are said to be worth in excess of £100 million. This is, in no small part, due to the way in which both Reynolds and McElhenney have leveraged the Red Dragons as a commercial brand, growing them to a wider audience and generating significant revenue, with Disney+ TV series Welcome to Wrexham proving a big hit.

Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney tipped to sell Wrexham AFC sooner rather than later by Joe Jacobson

Naturally, Wrexham will also have every intention of eventually reaching the Premier League but perhaps lack the infrastructure and financial muscle to do so in the near future, a contrast to League One promotion rivals Birmingham.

Their place in the Championship is edging ever closer, but the long-term plan beyond that has been speculated. Former Wycombe stalwart-turned EFL pundit Joe Jacobson believes Reynolds and McElhenney may sell sooner rather than later, with an even richer ownership group possibly more capable of leading the Red Dragons into the top-flight and beyond.

Jacobson spoke exclusively with FLW last week and questioned the long-term strategy under Reynolds and McElhenney. He said: "Is the stadium, is the club, big enough to go up again? Potentially, if you look at the likes of Bournemouth and Brentford, who’ve done it on similar stadium capacities.

"But I think Birmingham have a better chance of getting up there, with the bigger infrastructure behind them.

"Just the murmurings of the guys at Wrexham - I feel like at some point they’d sell sooner rather than later, whereas the Birmingham one seems like they’ve got a really long-term plan now."
