We looked at how much Norwich City will save on wages after the departures of Angus Gunn, Jacob Sorensen and Onel Hernandez.
Norwich City are set for a big summer of change after an incredibly underwhelming season in the Championship.
After their faint play-off hopes were ended, Norwich made the bold call to part company with head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup after just under 11 months in charge last week, and it was a decision that split opinion among the Carrow Road faithful.
Jack Wilshere is currently in charge of the Canaries on an interim basis, and after picking up a decent point in his first game in the 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough on Saturday, he will have another chance to impress when his side host Cardiff City this weekend.
While stopping short of confirming he is keen to land the permanent job, Wilshere admitted last week that he feels he is "ready to be a head coach at this level and make an impact", but Norwich are reportedly weighing up a surprise move for Watford boss Tom Cleverley, so it seems that a decision on the managerial situation has not yet been made.
Despite not having a manager in place, the Canaries announced their released and retained list on Monday ahead of the final game of the season, confirming that goalkeeper Angus Gunn, midfielder Jacob Sorensen and winger Onel Hernandez will depart at the end of their contracts this summer.
Gunn returned for a third spell at Norwich when he made the move from Southampton in the summer of 2021, and he has spent much of the last three seasons as the club's first choice goalkeeper.
Given Gunn's strong connection with the Canaries, his imminent exit has caught some supporters by surprise, but speculation over the 29-year-old's future had gathered pace in recent weeks amid reported interest from Leeds United.
Sorensen joined Norwich from Danish side Esbjerg fB in the summer of 2020, and he was part of the squad that won the Championship title under Daniel Farke in his first season at Carrow Road.
The midfielder has scored four goals and provided three assists in 109 games for the Canaries over the past five years, but he has struggled with injuries of late, and he has come in for criticism for his performances at times.
Of the three departing players, Hernandez is the longest-serving having made the move to Norwich from German side Eintracht Braunschweig in January 2018, and he has achieved promotion to the Premier League on two occasions during his time at the club.
However, Hernandez has also had two loan spells away from the club at Middlesbrough and Birmingham City, while he was left out of the squad for the games against Sunderland and Burnley earlier this month by former head coach Thorup due to his social media activity.
As Gunn, Sorensen and Hernandez prepare to make their final appearances in a Canaries shirt this weekend, we looked at how much the club will save in wages once they depart in the summer.
According to Capology, Gunn takes home £25,000 per week and £1,300,000 per year at Norwich, which makes him the highest-paid of the released trio, although it should be stressed that those figures are an estimate.
Sorensen is believed to earn £20,000 per week and £1,040,000 per year at Carrow Road, while Hernandez is estimated to receive £19,500 per week and £1,014,000 per year.
All three players are thought to be among Norwich's top 10 biggest earners, but they are on significantly less than the club's highest-paid duo, defenders Jack Stacey and Shane Duffy, who both take home £35,000 per week and £1,820,000 per year.
In total, the Canaries will save £64,500 per week and £3,354,000 per year on salaries once Gunn, Sorensen and Hernandez depart this summer, which will free up crucial space in the wage bill as sporting director Ben Knapper continues his rebuild of the squad.
However, Norwich will likely need to find replacements for each of the trio, and given the uncertain performances of George Long and Vicente Reyes when deputising between the sticks this season, bringing in a new goalkeeper to take over from Gunn will need to be the club's top priority.
