With the Europa League campaign now in the rearview mirror, it is time for Lazio to do the math and find out how much they collected from their European participation.
The Biancocelesti started their season on a superb note, finishing on top of the group stage table, ahead of 35 other teams. However, Marco Baroni’s men lost their steam when it mattered the most. Despite beating Viktoria Plzen in the Round of 16, observers had already noticed some worrying signs, and these were certainly confirmed in the quarter-finals.
Baroni and his players blamed the circumstances for the 0-2 defeat to Bodo/Glimt in Norway. But while they managed to complete a superb comeback at home, it was all undone by a late equalizer and shootout woes. Nevertheless, their participation still yielded a decent financial boost.
Calcio e Finanza calculated the club’s prize-money earnings, estimating the total at just over €23 million. This sum includes the participation bonus (€ 4.31m), the group-stage ranking bonus (3.58m), the European share (€6.24), the non-European share (2.08m), the results bonus (€2.85m), the round of 16 bonus (€1.75m) and the quarter-final bonus (€2.5).
Unfortunately for Lazio, the dramatic spot-kicks cost them at least €4.2 million, which represents the semi-final bonus.
In addition to the €23 million generated through prize money, Il Corriere dello Sport believes Lazio have earned another €7-8 million from matchday revenues, thus taking the overall Europa League earnings up to at least €30 million.
It should be noted that more than 54,000 spectators attended Lazio’s second-leg clash against Bodo/Glimt, which is a record attendance for the club in this competition, shattering the previous record set in the 2017/18 quarter-final against Salzburg (around 43,000).
