Ashley Young is closing in on a move to Ipswich Town
Ipswich Town are closing in on a move for Ashley Young following his exit from Everton earlier in the summer.
It has been reported by Talksport (11.40AM) that the 40-year-old’s proposed move to Watford has collapsed, and that the Suffolk outfit are now set to pounce.
The full-back spent the last two seasons at Goodison Park, and featured 32 times in the Premier League in the previous campaign.
However, he is now looking likely to take a step down to the Championship after departing the Merseyside outfit at the end of his contract.
Here we use estimated figures from Capology to see how much Ipswich may need to pay Young in wages as part of this deal…
Young made the switch to Everton in the 2023 summer transfer window following his exit from Aston Villa.
The veteran operated as a full-back for the majority of his time at Goodison, but he is also capable of playing as a winger.
Young was earning £40,000 per week during his time with the Toffees, which was just below the average salary for a first team player at the club during the 2023/24 campaign.
Abdoulaye Doucoure earned more than any other player in David Moyes’ squad, with the midfielder receiving £130,000 per week.
Jordan Pickford was second with a salary of £125,000-a-week for the England goalkeeper.
Idrissa Gueye, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and James Tarkowski rounded out the top five, with the former earning £120,000 and the latter pair being paid £100,000.
Young was paid the same amount as Armando Broja, with the likes of Jake O’Brien and Jarrad Branthwaite receiving £35,000 per week.
Young was also earning more than the likes of Asmir Begovic and James Garner (£30,000 per week each), as well as Nathan Patterson (£28,000).
McKenna’s side will be chasing automatic promotion back to the Premier League this season.
The Tractor Boys finished 19th in the table last year, ending their return to the top flight after just one year.
If Young arrives at Portman Road with the same salary as at Everton, then he will become the team’s top earner.
That honour is currently held by both Arijanet Muric and Dara O’Shea, with the pair receiving £35,000 per week from Ipswich.
Ben Johnson and Sam Morsy are third and fourth, with the duo earning £30,000 per week, but the Egyptian is set to depart the Suffolk outfit.
That will promote George Hirst (£27,500 per week) and Jacob Greaves (£25,000) up the pecking order of McKenna’s side.
The Tractor Boys currently have an average weekly salary of £17,960, totalling for £449,000 per week for the entire squad.
Ipswich rank third for the total size of their payroll in the Championship, with only their fellow relegated rivals Leicester City and Southampton paying more to their players per week.
The Foxes have a weekly payroll of £1 million, while the Saints pay £922,500 per week.
