Birmingham City have turned their attention to Swansea City's Harry Darling, with the central defender set to be out of contract this summer.

Chris Davies' side have enjoyed a remarkable season since their relegation to League One. On Tuesday, they secured a hard-fought promotion following a victory over Peterborough United, and their next aim is to clinch the title.

Looking beyond that, the club has already begun evaluating potential signings for the summer, with Darling being touted as a possible free transfer for them, according to Wales Online.

His contract at Swansea expires this summer, and while he has been offered a new deal, he has yet to put pen to paper.

Alan Sheehan's side will undoubtedly be eager to retain the 25-year-old, but Birmingham City will prove a formidable rival, particularly given their recent financial boost following the arrival of Knighthead Capital Management in 2023.

With this in mind, FLW have assessed Harry Darling's wage and where it will fit in Birmingham's payroll structure.

Harry Darling's Swansea Wage

Harry Darling joined Swansea in 2022 after spells at Cambridge United and Milton Keynes Dons. His initial wage was £19,231 per week, and it has remained the same since making the move to South Wales.

Annually, this sees the defender earn a healthy £1 million and that is the third-highest figure in the current squad, with only Kyle Naughton and Nottingham Forest loanee, Lewis O'Brien above him.

His contract is one of the largest within Swansea's wage structure and significantly exceeds the club's weekly player average, which stands at £10,986.

However, the 25-year-old is arguably deserving of his wage, with the defender one of the best players at the club. This campaign, he has played in 35 matches and has proven himself to be an extremely accomplished footballer on the ball as well as being solid defensively.

Harry Darling: A perfect addition for Birmingham City

Realistically, Darling's wage is unlikely to see much of a change at Birmingham, although it may be pushed slightly higher to entice him to join the Second City club.

In addition to the financial offer, the prospect of joining a promising project under an accomplished manager like Chris Davies, along with a squad already strong enough for a Championship push, makes this an appealing move. Darling would provide an ideal partnership alongside Christoph Klarer, who has been one of the standout performers in League One since his £2.5 million transfer from SV Darmstadt.

Not only that, but he brings real Championship experience to the side with over 100 appearances at second-tier level.

For owner Tom Wagner, Darling's addition would prove a real statement of intent. It would show that they have their aspirations set on Premier League football and could create a trademark of handpicking some of the second tier's best talent to try and secure promotion from it.

Darling is one of the top centre-backs in the Championship, and while his wage is not a small figure to cover, it will pose little concern for a club as financially robust as Birmingham.
