Birmingham City are closing in on their latest summer addition
Birmingham City are expected to win the race to sign Chuba Akpom from Ajax despite competition from his former side Middlesbrough.
According to Sky Sports (22.47), the Blues have agreed a deal with the Dutch giants to sign the forward on loan for the upcoming Championship campaign.
Akpom spent time in English football with the likes of Brentford, Brighton, Hull City and Arsenal before signing for Boro in 2020.
The 29-year-old was the top scorer in the Championship during the 2022/23 campaign, which led to his move to Ajax in a £12.3 million deal.
It has been claimed that Birmingham have won the race to sign Akpom from Ajax this summer.
The forward is set to join on loan from the Eredivisie outfit, with an obligation to buy if the club earns promotion to the Premier League.
It’s believed that the fee will cost Birmingham £7 million, with their sights set on gaining back-to-back promotions.
Middlesbrough made an attempt to bring Akpom back to the Riverside, but it’s understood that their approach was too late.
It has been reported that Akpom is set to undergo his medical on Monday ahead of his proposed move to St. Andrew’s.
Akpom was loaned out to Lille last January after falling down the pecking order of the first team squad, and he featured 14 times in Ligue 1 as the team finished fifth in the table.
Birmingham have had a busy summer transfer window since gaining promotion from League One under Chris Davies.
The Midlands outfit have signed the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Kany Fujimoto and Phil Neumann.
Permanent deals have also brought Taylor Garnder-Hickman, Alfons Sampsted and Demarai Gray back to the club.
Loan moves for Tommy Doyle, Eiran Cashin and James Beadle have also been completed.
Akpom wasn’t able to really make it work at Ajax, with the forward constantly struggling for regular game time during his stint in Amsterdam.
However, his previous record with Middlesbrough is encouraging for Davies ahead of the new season.
He scored 28 times in the league in his final year at the Riverside, which would be a great return for the Blues if he could repeat that again this season.
Given he is arriving on loan, this could prove a smart addition to bolster their attacking options and provide competition for the likes of Jay Stansfield and Furuhashi.
