Birmingham City's plans for their new 62,000-capacity stadium are certainly ambitious, and these ambitions stretch beyond the actual stadium itself.

Birmingham City have ambitious plans for a new, 62,000-capacity stadium, and their ambition isn't limited to just the one pitch.

Birmingham's record-breaking promotion from League One doesn't seem to be the summit of the club's ambitions under their new owners.

The Blues have already been extremely active in the transfer market, bringing in a whole raft of new players as they seek to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2011.

But Birmingham's ambition isn't limited to what happens on the pitch. The club have revealed plans to build a new, 62,000-capacity stadium a mile from St Andrew's, and the scale of this project is huge.

Birmingham's new Sports Quarter will have 19 pitches

The plans for their new stadium are unlike anything seen before in this country, and the Daily Mail has reported from inside the club on the scale of those plans, from their pre-season training camp in Portugal.

These include a jaw-dropping 19 pitches, as well as a state-of-the-art training academy, with the club's owners, the Knightshead consortium, having made the decision that they want to compete with the best in the country.

The development of such a site is so grand that it is clear that the club will need Premier League football to be able to sustain it, and they demonstrate why Blues supporters are so excited about their club's current trajectory.

The Birmingham Sports Quarter will be a home for the club like no other

That so many pitches are to be installed there is but one sign of the scale of a project that is like no other in the history of the game in this country. It's estimated that it will cost £3 billion pounds to complete, and it will cover a staggering 125 acres when it's done.

But there is an element of risk to such a decision. Birmingham may well be ambitious, but the Championship is a big step up from League One and parachute payments give relegated and recently relegated clubs a substantial financial advantage over those without them.

With the vast cost of the new stadium and the money being poured into the team, Birmingham will hit a point at which the money put into the club will have to turn into money being received. The Blues will have to make it into the Premier League in order to make their investment profitable, and that isn't necessarily straightforward, given how competitive the Championship is looking ahead of the 2025-26 season.
