England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales confirmed as sole bidders to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035.
The home nations had recently expressed interest in the UK hosting the tournament and today FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced that this had been the only such declaration.
Speaking at the UEFA Congress in Belgrade, Infantino had said: “I can confirm that, as part of the bidding process, we received one bid for 2031 and one valid bid for 2035. The 2035 bid is from Europe from the Home Nations.”
FA chief executive, Mark Bullingham, told englandfootball.com: “We are honoured to be the sole bidder for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035.
“Hosting England’s first FIFA World Cup since 1966, along with our home nations partners, will be very special. The hard work starts now, to put together the best possible bid by the end of the year.”
Scottish Women’s Football CEO Aileen Campbell said: “The significance of this announcement to women and girls in Scotland cannot be understated. Visibility is everything in women’s sport, and the potential impact of hosting the world’s biggest women’s football event on the host nation’s grassroots game can be a game-changer.
“We are already seeing unprecedented growth in the grassroots women’s and girls’ game in Scotland, from the ScottishPower Youth Challenge Cup to the Barclays Scottish Women’s Championship. In a decade’s time, who can tell how many women and girls will be welcoming the giants of world football to the UK?”
The 2031 edition also has a sole bidder in the USA, while Brazil were announced last year as the hosts for the next finals in 2027.
