In an episode of transfer insight, we were joined by Dutch football expert, Michael Statham, to discuss the newest addition to the Reds, Jeremie Frimpong.
Michael highlighted Frimpong’s rise as a high-impact talent both domestically and internationally, labelling him as “one of the most in-demand players to play for the Netherlands.”
Frimpong’s best role is widely considered to be on the right wing. Whilst he has experience as a right-back, his natural instincts and attributes are more suited to an advanced role.
“At times as a right-back, he has been caught out defensively… attacking-wise it suits him a lot.”
Michael emphasises Frimpong’s value to Liverpool, not just for his quality, but for his flexibility across the right flank.
“As for where he fits in under Arne Slot, as a right-sided player, his versatility and ability to play both positions in the game are massive.”

One of the 24-year-old’s biggest strengths is his unpredictability in the final third. He combines explosive acceleration with smart decision-making in wide areas.
Michael stated, “he brings directness and is not predictable- whether trying to lay off a single pass, or at times taking on his man. His acceleration is brilliant.”
“As a player, he is so electric and direct- with a cross into the box, high or low, and he finds a lot of joy passing into the edge of the area.”
“Liverpool won’t build the team around him, but that’s okay. Arne Slot has seen what he has done with the Netherlands and knows he has the best creativity.”
Although Frimpong has occasionally featured at right-back, Statham believes his best performance has come from advanced wide areas.
“I’d be surprised if he plays predominantly as a right-back. He plays well overlapping, but he is better on the outside to do what he does best.”
It is also important to note that with the expected departure of Darwin Nunez in the summer, the potential change to the centre-forward dynamic could complement Frimpong’s style and facilitate his integration into the side.
