Pep Guardiola says he will wait to see if Erling Haaland is ready ‘mentally and physically’ to face Brentford this weekend.
Haaland will be given time in the run-up to the Bees clash tomorrow as he comes to terms with the bereavement of close family friend Ivar Eggja, with the manager offering his condolences to the striker ahead of Saturday’s 15:00 (UK) game.
“It was a tough moment for him and his family,” Guardiola told media at his pre-match press conference.
“It was sad news. He was close to him and his family. 59 years old.
“Our thoughts are with him and his family.
“We will see tomorrow if he is mentally and physically able to play.”
Guardiola also confirmed Rodri and Phil Foden are back in training as the Blues prepare to face Thomas Frank’s team but revealed Nathan Ake is out due to the injury he sustained with the Netherlands on international duty.
PFA Men’s Player of the Season Foden was a second half substitute on the opening day against Chelsea before sitting out the home win against Ipswich and away victory at West Ham due to illness.
The issue also meant he missed linking up with Lee Carsley’s Three Lions for their Nations League triumphs over Republic of Ireland and Finland.
But Guardiola confirmed the talismanic midfielder is back involved with the group at the CFA.
Spain’s Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament Rodri is yet to play this season after suffering a hamstring injury in the final in Berlin against Foden’s England.
He was, however, on the bench for City’s 3-1 win at West Ham before the international break.
And the boss said he’s also in good shape.
“They’re good,” the manager continued.
“They’re training. Really good.”
Ake, meanwhile, was carried off injured on a stretcher as the Netherlands and Germany played out a 2-2 Nations League draw in Amsterdam.
The 29-year-old has only played two minutes of football this season after his exertions at Euro 2024, coming off the bench in our 3-1 win at West Ham and replacing Josko Gvardiol.
And he’s not ready for our fourth match of the top-flight season this weekend, according to the boss, who says he expects Ake back during the next international break.
