Viktor Gyokeres is open to a move to Manchester United this summer despite the absence of Champions League football.

Ruben Amorim is keen to bring in the Sporting CP striker from his former club, as the Red Devils look to sign a centre-forward. No approach has yet been made, but Amorim has remained in contact with the Swedish striker since leaving Lisbon last November.

Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting across the last two seasons, finishing consecutive campaigns as the Primeira Liga’s top scorer. Sporting will reluctantly allow the 26-year-old to depart this summer and will demand €70m (£59m) from suitors.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with Gyokeres, while Chelsea and several other sides across Europe have enquired into the conditions of a deal.

talkSport are claiming Liverpool and Juventus are monitoring his situation, while there’s interest from Saudi clubs Al-Qadsiah and Al-Ittihad. However, Gyokeres is keen to remain in Europe.

Manchester United’s failure to qualify for Europe had appeared to dent their hopes, but Gyokeres is understood to still be open to Old Trafford.

He thrived under Amorim during the 2023/24 season, winning the Primeira Liga title, Golden Boot, and Player of the Season award.

However, any move will be dependent on outgoings at Manchester United after the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and current pursuit of Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. The Red Devils are working to offload Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho.

Gyokeres has withdrawn from the Sweden squad for this month’s internationals. However, head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson denied the reason for his absence was to discuss a transfer.

“No!” the Swedish boss said. “He felt a small injury and our medical team was already aware of it and we decided, together, to release him,” adding, “I spoke to Viktor last week. He hasn’t trained much in the last few weeks and was feeling some discomfort because of a small injury.

“I was happy to see him and have him with us in this training camp. It says a lot about Viktor, how much he wants to get involved. We’re thinking about it [a replacement] and need to talk more about it. In a perfect world, we have all players available.”
