Gus Hamer discussed his dream of winning promotion prior to Sheffield United's play-off final loss to Sunderland at Wembley.
Sheffield United’s Gustavo Hamer has revealed his dream was to win promotion to the Premier League prior to suffering a second play-off heartbreak at Wembley.
The attacking midfielder has been a huge player for the Blades this season, starring as they reached the play-off final, which saw him named as Player of the Year for the entire division.
However, Chris Wilder’s men fell short at the final hurdle, as Sunderland won the final 2-1 thanks to a very late Tommy Watson goal.
Given how important the game was, along with the manner of the defeat, it’s fair to say that this is one that will hurt all connected to Sheffield United for a long time.
And, for Hamer, it was a second loss in the final, as he was in the Coventry XI that were beaten by Luton Town on penalties after he had scored in regular time.
Hamer will have gone to Wembley on Sunday looking to make up for that 2023 loss, and he referenced that game when he was asked what his ‘dream’ is, and what was on his ‘bucket list’ in page 84 of the play-off final matchday programme.
“Getting promoted. It sounds like the obvious thing to say but I’ve never been promoted before. I was in the final with Coventry and lost, so I’d like to add a promotion to my CV.”
So, that defeat would have been tough for Hamer to take, but whilst he won’t get the promotion that he wanted, there’s every chance that he will be playing in the Premier League next season anyway.
As outlined above, the 27-year-old enjoyed a brilliant individual campaign, so it’s no surprise that other clubs have taken notice of his performances.
It has already been claimed that both Everton and Leeds are tracking Hamer, and Sheffield United might find it difficult to stand in his way if a serious offer does arrive.
Another year outside the top-flight was always going to have financial implications for the Blades, and Hamer is undoubtedly one of the most valuable assets at Bramall Lane right now, so his sale may fund any business that Wilder wants to do.
