After last night's defeat to AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa League, Guglielmo Vicario seemed to be implying he wanted the fans to get behind the team - with his gestures towards the away end after the game.
It is safe to say it has caused controversy, with the fanbase very divided on whether or not the goalkeeper was right to do that. As you would expect, is a very emotional time for the fans at the moment.
Nevertheless, the goalkeeper has taken to social media to address the situation, stating the following on his Instagram account: As a team, we take full responsibility for our terrible performance on the pitch last night. We will work even harder to understand, as a mature group, what went wrong.
Still, we have a great opportunity, starting from Sunday [against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League], to redeem ourselves and prepare in the best way possible for the second battle next Thursday. Regarding what happened at the final whistle in front of the away section, I want to clarify my intention to keep everyone as united as possible, even in the disappointment we have caused our people.
If I have offended anyone, I apologise to those who felt affected. Post-match emotions can be misunderstood, but I assure you that my commitment to this team and you, our fans, grows stronger day after day. COYS, together."
Whether you think Vicario was in the right or wrong after the full time whistle, it is hard to deny that he genuinely does care about the club. With the current situation, you feel that Spurs do need more characters like that. One of very few players to turn up in the game too, things could have been a lot worse without him - a one on one save to deny former Spurs striker Troy Parrott was a save that particularly stood out.
Completely understand the frustration and emotion within the fanbase, but the goalkeeper did not consciously want to annoy anyone. As he said, emotions can run high. With this post, we can definitely put a line through it, and move on. Spurs need Vicario, that can't be questioned at all.
Like he said himself, now there is an opportunity to put things right, starting from the game against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday. Then, the biggest game of the season in the second leg next Thursday. Let's see.
