Pep Guardiola says Man Utd fans who made derogatory chants towards Phil Foden’s mother should feel “ashamed”.
Foden started in the goalless draw with rivals Manchester United before being replaced in the second half, when he was targeted with the chants from sections of the home supporters.
Guardiola criticised those who took aim at Foden, saying: “The chants to him? A lack of class.
“It’s not United, it’s the people. We are so exposed, the people who are now on the screens in football. Managers, owners, especially the players.
“I honestly don’t understand the minds of the people, involving Phil’s mum. It’s a lack of class and they should be ashamed.”
Guardiola also backed Foden to get back to his best form, adding: “I see every training session, the passion and the smile on his face. This is what I want.
“Of course the impact has not been (the same) but if you see the numbers compared to the last four, five or six years, in terms of goals and assists, this season we dropped incredibly. It’s not one, that would be easy, it’s all of them.
“In a long career you always have seasons when you are not (at your best).
“He will be back.”
City sit fifth after their point against their rivals, one point behind Chelsea who are fourth and one ahead of Aston Villa in sixth.
And Guardiola admitted his side were not at their best at Old Trafford.
“I think we defended really well,” he said.
“They are dangerous, especially when you lose the ball in positions that are not good. They can run and they are dangerous through that.
“Also we had our chances. The second half in the first 10 or 15 minutes was our best moment.
“I saw many good things in the last two games in terms of the passion without the ball, that we lost many, many times this season for many reasons.
“But with the ball our strength is always about being positional and being in the right spots and we lost that today. We were not in the right positions to hurt them more than we hurt them.
“But it’s fine. We take the point and move on.”
