Spoils shared in Innsbruck

Our Red Bulls had to settle with a 0-0 draw at WSG Tirol today. After a first-half with few highlights, our boys upped the pressure in the second period – with Daghim, Baidoo and Morgalla having big opportunities to win it, without any goals coming.

Match summary

It was a superb day for football in Innsbruck as our boys made a purposeful start. The hosts held their own physically, with Adam Daghim the subject of some rough treatment in the opening minutes.

Pep Lijnders' side continued to link up dangerously in front of the hosts' area, but various limbs in and around the penalty area blocked our attacking efforts. We increased the pressure towards the end of the first half, without getting any concrete chances. Only a shot from Oscar Gloukh – after Karim Konate had teed him up perfectly – forced goalkeeper Adam Stejskal into making a save (29'). After an uneventful final phase of the first period, we broke without any goals.

We knew we had to step up a gear or two in the second period to land three points. Our boys came out of the break raring to do just that. After 15 minutes of striving, the referee paused the play for ten minutes around the hour mark - as a steward got hit in the face by a ball bouncing off the advertising hoardings and was treated for over ten minutes before being taken to hospital. We wish him all the best!

We restarted in the same position of doing our utmost to work a way through. We hit the ball around nicely trying to find holes in the opposing backline, but nothing would come our way. Daghim tested Stejskal with a mighty drive after being supplied by Dorgeles Nene (82'), but that was as good as it got for us in the regular 90 minutes.

During the 12 minutes of stoppage time, both Baidoo (90+7') as well as substitute Leandro Morgalla (90+10') had chances to win it that just would not go in.

We are therefore left waiting for our first win of September, with the next opportunity coming on Wednesday (25 September). Our UNIQA ÖFB Cup second-round encounter kicks off at 18:00 at the Stadion Alte Au of SV Stockerau against Viktoria Vienna. The game can be watched on an ÖFB TV stream or in the ORF 1 multi-match broadcast in Austria.

Our high pressing and midfield pressing was good. Our problem was that we were too deep when we were on the ball and couldn't pose enough problems for Tirol. We played better in the final 30 mintues and created a series of chances. We would have won if we had played like that for the entire match. A point is okay today after our recent weeks - we can build on that.

Pepijn Lijnders

We had a lot of possession but struggled to find our way through in the final third. We were calm and patient, but we didn't put enough crosses in or shoot on goal often enough. We have to learn from that, as we are a young bunch. With our fans behind us, we have to bounce back!
