Kevin Trapp made his return from injury as Eintracht Frankfurt played out a 0-0 draw with FC Augsburg on Matchday 30.
The in-form hosts had the better chances in the first half, but Eintracht defended doggedly to head into the break on level terms. The visitors were much-improved after the restart and twice went close to snatching all three points, but a draw was a fair result on the balance of play.
Three changes after midweek injuries
Dino Toppmöller made three changes to the team that started Thursday’s UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg against Tottenham Hotspur. Eintracht captain Kevin Trapp replaced injured goalkeeper Kaua Santos, who suffered a ruptured cruciate knee ligament in midweek, while Farès Chaibi and Michy Batshuayi both started, in place of Jean-Mattéo Bahoya and the injured Mario Götze.
No way through for dominant Augsburg
Only champions Bayer Leverkusen and league leaders Bayern Munich had picked up more Bundesliga points than Augsburg in 2025 heading into this game, so it came as no surprise that Jess Thorup’s side started Sunday’s contest on the front foot. Chances were few and far between in the early stages, but Samuel Essende flashed a shot wide from a tight angle after 19 minutes as the hosts began to apply pressure on Trapp’s goal.
The Eagles skipper produced a marvellous save five minutes later to deny Cedric Zesiger, whose close-range effort from Marius Wolf’s cross had deflected off Tuta and onto the crossbar – but the goal would not have counted as Wolf had been in an offside position in the build-up. Eintracht will have been the happier of the two teams at the halfway mark after struggling to threaten Finn Dahmen in the Augsburg goal, but Toppmöller’s charges made a much brighter start to the second period.
Dahmen keeps Eagles at bay
Essende dragged another shot wide eight minutes after the restart, but Eintracht were almost in front moments later as Dahmen denied Hugo Ekitiké from a tight angle before Zesiger’s attempted clearance struck Rasmus Kristensen and rebounded off the post. Half-time substitute Ansgar Knauff spurned another golden opportunity to give the Eagles the lead when his first-time shot from Nathaniel Brown’s left-wing delivery flew just off target.
The home side remained a threat and almost broke the deadlock themselves when Mergim Berisha cut onto his right foot and sent a curling effort against the post, before Zesiger’s last-ditch challenge at the other end prevented Knauff from sliding Eintracht ahead. Dahmen denied Ekitiké in a one-on-one and parried a Tuta header to safety as the Eagles finished strongly, but only a fantastic save by Trapp from Phillip Tietz prevented Augsburg from grabbing all three points with two minutes remaining.
