It was not straightforward at all, but the Germany U19 team finally made it into the semi-final of the European Championship. Following a heavy defeat against the Netherlands and a shocking collapse versus England, they trailed Norway until the 85th minute when only a win would see them progress.
Assan Ouédraogo’s spectacular goal and Said El Mala’s late-gasp winner had seen them flip the script, while the Netherlands did them a favor by beating England. In his first tournament, Hanno Baiistch has managed to guide Germany U19 to a first knockout stage appearance since 2014.
Back then, Germany won the competition for the third time in their history with Davie Selke finishing as the winner of both the Golden Player and top-scorer prize. Balitsch was part of Germany’s squad that finished third in the penultimate U18 European championship in 2000. In 2002, UEFA changed the format to U19 while keeping it in their annual calendar.
Team News
Ouédraogo will most likely win a starting berth after capping off an excellent group stage performance with one of the goals of the tournament. Meanwhile, Leopold Wurm is expected to keep his place at the back due to Elias Decker’s injury.
Germany U19’s captain Noah Darvich could also miss this one, like his absence in the Norway game due to an injury. Robert Ramsak, who was among the top scorers in the U17 Euros a couple of years ago alongside a certain Lamine Yamal, will hope to get more minutes after making his tournament debut against Norway.
Like the Netherlands in Germany’s group, Spain finished with a maximum of nine points. The holders started their championship defense with a narrow victory over Denmark in the opening game of the tournament.
Including Quim Junyent, who scored a hat-trick against Montengero in his first start, they had seven players on the scoresheet in the three group stage matches. The only goal Paco Gallardo’s team conceded is in their 3-1 victory over hosts Romania.
Last year, Spain won the U19 Euros for the ninth time with a 2-0 win over France in the final. After the tournament, José Lana left his position to be appointed as Syria’s national team coach. Gallardo previously worked as part of Sevilla and Leeds United coaching teams before joining Spain’s youth setup in February 2024.
Team News
Since Spain secured semi-final spot with a game to spare, Gallardo had the chance to rest key players in their 5-0 win over Montenegro. While Darvich will probably miss the encounter, there are six Barcelona players in Spain’s 20-man squad..
Tournament Recap
Hosts Romania will face the difficult challenge of the Netherlands in the other semi-final later on Monday. The final will be played on Thursday at the Rapid-Giulești Stadium.
