Julian Nagelsmann has moved quickly to shut down speculation surrounding a potential return of Manuel Neuer to the German national team, firmly backing Marc-Andre ter Stegen as his first-choice goalkeeper for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking at the International Coaching Congress in Leipzig, the Germany head coach offered a clear timeline for Ter Stegen’s comeback while expressing full faith in his ability to return to top form.
Despite Ter Stegen’s current injury setback and his uncertain status at Barcelona following the arrival of Joan Garcia, Nagelsmann reaffirmed his support:
“I know Marc will come back.” He added, “In my mind, I know that Marc will come back in December, then play the two matches, in March, and in June as well, and then play in the World Cup.”
The national coach’s remarks come amid growing calls for Neuer’s reinstatement, particularly after Ter Stegen was reportedly demoted to third-choice at Barcelona.
The debate around Germany’s goalkeeper situation intensified after legendary shot-stopper Sepp Maier said a comeback by Neuer “would be the best solution.”
Maier, a long-time admirer of Neuer, believes the veteran could step in during a critical period.
However, Nagelsmann disagrees, explaining that the decision to move on from Neuer was deliberate and carefully made.
“Manu played a very good Club World Cup, but we made the decision (to leave) quite consciously.”

Though firm, Nagelsmann still left a slight possibility open: “There is no consideration” to bring Neuer back for now.
That said, the door is not completely closed. The only condition Nagelsmann set for Ter Stegen to remain his number one is that he must return as Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper after the winter break.
It was very bitter for Marc, and I think the recent period has been very tough.
“I have great communication with him, and he fully understands the current situation and can assess it correctly.
“He is our main goalkeeper when he is healthy and when he is the number one at the club, and that’s no different from any other player.”
If that does not happen, a transfer in January could become necessary to ensure he gets the playing time required before the World Cup.
“After the rehabilitation period, he needs to return to playing at the club and be the number one there, then I will see.
“If he returns to being the main goalkeeper at his club, he can definitely be our first goalkeeper, because he deserves it,” he explained.
Still, Nagelsmann is confident about the depth in Germany’s goalkeeping department, stating he’s “not at all worried” about the position and noting that Germany has “many good” options to rely on.
