Liverpool supporters still sing the name of Roberto Firmino with affection, a player whose time at Anfield was defined by brilliance, generosity and a unique understanding of the game. Though the Brazilian left the club in 2023, his influence continues to echo through the red half of Merseyside. This week, his latest move made headlines once again, drawing congratulations from former teammates and fans alike.
After a challenging stint in Saudi Arabia with Al Ahli, Firmino has officially signed for Qatari side Al Sadd. His time in Saudi football started with promise but faltered quickly. Despite being omitted from Al Ahli’s registered league squad, the Brazilian found redemption in continental competition, playing a pivotal role in securing the club’s first ever AFC Champions League title in May.

Now, he begins a fresh journey in Doha, with Al Sadd confirming the transfer on Wednesday via a slick unveiling video shared on their Instagram page. The post sparked an emotional response from his close friend and former Liverpool colleague Fabinho, who commented, “Bobby!!!! God bless you my brother!” accompanied by emojis of strength and love. Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Adrián also shared his delight, writing, “Congratulations brother. Continue to enjoy, all the best!”
Liverpool’s current forward line remains in transition following Firmino’s departure. While Darwin Núñez has worked tirelessly since his arrival, comparisons with Firmino are both inevitable and, at times, unforgiving. Núñez’s style is vastly different, and his tenure has had moments of brilliance as well as frustration.
This summer, Arne Slot has moved to strengthen the squad with the signing of Hugo Ekitike, a player who draws certain stylistic comparisons with Firmino. The young French forward is highly regarded, and hopes are high that he can grow into the kind of multi-functional attacking role that Firmino made his own.
Slot, fresh off delivering Liverpool’s first Premier League title since 2020, will be well aware of the high standards set by the former number nine. Firmino’s blend of creativity, humility and tactical intelligence made him a unique figure, not only at Liverpool but in European football at large.
Firmino will be joining a less star-studded squad at Al Sadd compared to his previous team, but he won’t be without talent around him. Former Wolves captain Romain Saïss brings experience in defence, while midfield duties may be shared with Mohamed Camara, previously of RB Salzburg.
Among Firmino’s new teammates are three fellow Brazilians: Claudinho, a skilful attacker with a notable spell at Zenit St Petersburg, Paulo Otávio and Giovani. Together, they will form the backbone of a team looking to challenge for honours under manager Félix Sánchez.
For Firmino, this move is less about glitter and more about continuing to play the game with joy and commitment. Liverpool may have moved forward, but for many, his contribution will always be cherished.
