The Celtic Story, the original theatre production charting the unique history of Celtic Football Club, has today announced an extra date will be added to the show’s three week run - with a special Gala Performance to be held on Thursday, August 31 at the SEC Armadillo in support of Celtic FC Foundation.
The Celtic Story was first performed at The Pavilion Theatre in 1988 by Wildcat Theatre Company and was the very first play of its kind about a football club. Commissioned by Celtic to commemorate the club’s Centenary Season, it was a smash hit with Hoops fans, with the original cast including the likes of Dorothy Paul and one of Scotland’s greatest living actors, Peter Mullan.
Since then, there have been three hugely successful revivals of the production, with the last run of the show taking place over 20 years ago.
This latest - and long overdue - revival, scripted and directed by Martin McCormick and Martin McCardie, has been updated to reflect the changing times and evolving history of the club while still capturing the unwavering passion and commitment of the fans.
Featuring a brand new song, Celtic Did It First, co-penned by Ken McCluskey - of Bluebells' fame, The Celtic Story is explored through the Burns family, an Irish immigrant family living in Glasgow with a special connection to the club.
Funny, moving and completely gripping, it promises to be an unforgettable night at the theatre, with this Gala Performance an extra special event with net proceeds going towards Celtic FC Foundation.
Celtic FC Foundation’s Chief Executive, Tony Hamilton, said: “We’re delighted that the Celtic Story is returning after all of these years. Many of us are old enough to have witnessed it first time around in 1988, and we’re excited to see what it looks like with so much having happened at the football club since the centenary.
“Everyone at Celtic FC Foundation is enormously grateful to Regular Music and the wider production team for ensuring that Celtic FC Foundation benefits entirely from the opening night’s gala performance. It’s a fantastic gesture and it will ensure that the work we do with people within our communities can continue.”
Tickets for the Gala Performance will be available to supporters on Ticketmaster pre-sale from 10am on Thursday, August 10 and on Ticketmaster general sale from 9am on Friday, August 11.
Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster for The Celtic Story performances from Friday, September 1 to Saturday, September 16, at SEC Armadillo, Glasgow.
