Gunners in the thick of battle again

After two consecutive runner-up Premier League finishes to Manchester City, Arsenal will be delighted to be ahead of the champions after 14 games. But they still have a small matter of the seven-point gap they have to make up on runaway leaders Liverpool.

The Gunners have been impressive recently. They have scored 15 goals in their last four matches so the deficit in the points column has nothing to do with a lack of attacking intent from Mikel Arteta’s team.

A 5-2 victory in their last away game at West Ham United was a case in point and they built on that with an impressive 2-0 home win over Manchester United on Wednesday.

Sunday’s opponents Fulham, meanwhile, have been inconsistent. That characteristic has been well illustrated in their last two home league games as they followed a 4-1 defeat to struggling Wolves with a 3-1 success over Brighton on Thursday.

They seem to have enough to suggest they will not be involved in the relegation picture this season. And, as six of their last 10 league games at Craven Cottage have featured at least four goals, it should be an entertaining London derby.

Fulham vs Arsenal team news

Fulham’s Reiss Nelson is unable to play against his parent club, but is highly unlikely to have been fit anyway as he picked up a hamstring injury in Thursday’s win over Brighton.

One boost for the Cottagers is that Serbian midfielder Sasa Lukic is available after he served a one-man suspension for five bookings. But they will still have to do without Tom Cairney, who remains banned following his recent red card against Tottenham Hotspur.

Harrison Reed and Joachin Andersen are still out injured, but Jorge Cuenca and Ryan Sessegnon will hope to be fit enough to gain a place on Marco Silva’s bench.

Both left-back Ricardo Calafiori and central defender Gabriel were missing from the Arsenal line-up that beat Man United on Wednesday, but it would be a surprise if they did not come back into the equation.

Fulham’s Emile Smith Rowe will be looking to make a big impression against his former club following his move from the Emirates in the summer.

Arteta is having to manage his playing resources with a Champions League appointment with Monaco to come this week. That could see Leandro Trossard come back into the team after he was brought on for the last 20 minutes against the Red Devils.

Full-backs Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu remain on the treatment table. England winger Bukayo Saka is likely to still be the Gunners’ most creative outlet after accumulating 10 assists this season.
