Talks over a contract extension for Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega remain ‘significantly stalled’, according to new information emerging from Germany.

Manchester City’s back-up goalkeeper has been in sensational form this season, with the shot-stopper called upon more often than perhaps he would have expected through injuries sustained by mainstay Ederson.

Ortega’s golden moments came towards the back end of the ongoing season, starring in performances at Anfield, the Santiago Bernabeu, and most notably at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League run-in.

Having replaced Ederson in the second-half due to the Brazilian sustaining a fractured eye socket, Ortega excelled and maintained a crucial lead for Manchester City by denying Tottenham on three occasions including a one-vs-one against Heung-min Son.

However, the future remains far from certain for Ortega at Manchester City, with his performances for the club no doubt deserving of consistent first-team opportunities elsewhere in the European game.

According to the information of Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Stefan Ortega would like to stay at Manchester City. However, talks over a new contract extension until the summer of 2026 are still ‘significantly stalled’.

It is further detailed that the situation remains with no agreement in place, and especially on ‘financial aspects’ of a new deal, with Ortega’s own personal ambitions within the game standing stronger than ever.

Plettenberg details that it is clear that Stefan Ortega wants to be the number one choice in goal in future, either at Manchester City or at another club. Should an Etihad Stadium contract extension not be reached in the ‘next few weeks’, a move in the summer is ‘planned’.

Across all competitions this season, Stefan Ortega has registered 19 appearances for Manchester City, with the majority coming in the Premier League whilst starring in all of the club’s domestic cup matches.

Ortega will also start Manchester City’s final competitive fixture of the season, as the club travel to Wembley Stadium to take on Manchester United on Saturday afternoon, aiming to retain their FA Cup title.

Out of Manchester City’s five matches in the tournament so far this season, Ortega has managed to retain four clean sheets coming against Huddersfield Town, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Chelsea in the semi-final stage.
