The 2024/25 season marks the end of an unforgettable era—Jamie Vardy will officially leave Leicester City. After more than a decade of grit, goals, and glory, Vardy bids farewell to the club that helped him become a Premier League icon.
In a heartfelt message to fans, Vardy said, “I’ve been here so long that I truly never thought it would end, so this has not only been really difficult for me to write but also a really difficult decision to make.”
Despite a disappointing final season that saw Leicester relegated once again, Vardy’s impact is undeniable. In 206 Premier League appearances, he netted 143 goals, placing him 15th on the all-time list. Remarkably, he reached the 100-goal milestone faster than legends like Wayne Rooney, Didier Drogba, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Vardy’s story is one of resilience. Released by Sheffield Wednesday Youth Academy as a teenager, he found himself in England’s seventh tier with Stocksbridge Park Steels, working in a carbon fiber factory to support his soccer dreams. During this time, Vardy also dealt with a criminal conviction and famously played matches wearing an ankle monitor, sometimes being subbed off to meet curfew.
With 66 goals in 107 appearances for Stocksbridge, Vardy earned moves up the ladder, shining at Halifax Town and then starring at Fleetwood Town. His 34 goals in 40 games at Fleetwood earned him Player of the Year honors and led to a dream £1 million+ move to Leicester City in 2012.
In his first season at Leicester, he scored 16 goals in 41 appearances, helping the club secure promotion to the Premier League. In the span of seven years he had played in the seventh, sixth, third and second tiers of the English game.
Debuting in the Premier League in 2014, Vardy was already 27 years old. But his crowning achievement came two years later as an integral part of the miraculous 2016 Premier League title win. During Leicester’s run Vardy broke the Premier League record for consecutive goals scored (previously held by Ruud van Nistelrooy with eleven). He later won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2019/20 season and represented England in both the Euros and the World Cup.
Jamie Vardy’s journey from non-league obscurity to Premier League royalty is one of the most remarkable in modern football. As Ruud van Nistelrooy once put it, Vardy is “the best player ever to play for Leicester City.”
From factory shifts and ankle tags to league titles and golden boots—Jamie Vardy didn’t just play the game; he changed it.
