Rhian Brewster's Sheffield United contract is set to expire at the end of the month
Rhian Brewster is yet to agree terms with Sheffield United over a new contract amid its expiry at the end of the month.
According to The Star, the forward is nearing the Bramall Lane exit door, with his deal set to conclude on June 30.
The 25-year-old originally joined the Yorkshire outfit in the 2020 summer transfer window, arriving for a club record fee of £23.5 million from Liverpool.
However, he started just 16 of his 36 appearances in the Championship last season, having been always down the pecking order for a number of years - although it represented the most matches the former England youth international had started in a league campaign for the Blades.
Brewster is reportedly set to depart Sheffield United at the end of the month, with no contract agreement signed and sealed as it stands.
It’s understood that a contract offer has been made by the Blades, but the striker has yet to put pen to paper.
And it has also been claimed that the appointment of Ruben Selles as manager earlier this week has had no impact on that offer, which remains on the table.
Talks with Brewster remain ongoing, with the club hoping to find a solution that could keep him at Bramall Lane for next season in a bid to utilise his versatility across the front line.
While there are just a number of days remaining on his current deal, there is still some optimism that an agreement can be reached to extend his stay with the Championship side.
However, if no deal is agreed by the end of the month then he will become a free agent, which opens the door to a move to another club without the need to negotiate with Sheffield United.
Brewster was signed by Sheffield United in 2020, with Wilder in charge, as they looked to build on their ninth place finish in the Premier League.
But a difficult first campaign at Bramall Lane saw the forward start 12 league games, making a total 27 appearances, and failing to register a single goal or assist.
He has been unable to nail down a place as a consistent starter in the team since, with injuries also impacting his time at the club, but he did show signs of life under Wilder last season at times.
Brewster has never been able to become a key part of the Sheffield United squad despite being their record signing.
He did prove last season to be a valuable squad member, chipping in with four goals and three assists, and making the most number of appearances in a single campaign during his time at the club.
The forward could still be a useful player to have with Selles now in charge, but the lack of immediate urgency involved to get a deal agreed to keep him at Bramall Lane suggests that he’s still not too important to the team.
Losing him as a free agent wouldn’t be ideal given how much he cost five years ago, but it might be a fitting end to his time with Sheffield United, if that is what happens.
