The Owls' owner has turned down an offer for the club.
A bid from a US-based consortium for Sheffield Wednesday has reportedly been rejected by the club's owner, Dejphon Chansiri.
This is according to The Star, who further stated that the prospective purchasing group was made up of "successful business people and professional athletes," from Florida. The bid was said to have been made before the Easter Weekend.
The late payment of players earlier this month sparked new life in the protests against the Owls' owner. Many members of the club's playing staff turned out against Hull City at the start of April without being paid.
The issue, which was put down to "cashflow problems in Mr Chansiri’s personal business dealings," as per The Star, was resolved just in time for the club to avoid a three-window transfer ban, although Wednesday aren't out of the woods yet. If Chansiri is even just one day late on his payments over the next two months, then the ban will become active.
Protests against the Thai businessman were held, again, on Saturday when the Owls hosted Portsmouth. Chansiri has previously said that he would sell the club if the right offer came along. This one from the American consortium did not meet that mark.
A statement from the club's spokesperson on the rejected offer said that the bid did not meet the requirements to make Chansiri go into talks with the consortium. "We can confirm an expression of interest was received from USA-based investors, working together with a previous sponsor of the club," the statement read, as per The Star.
"No proof of funds was presented, nor the identity of the investors, and the offer was derisory. In addition, outstanding monies owed to the club by the previous sponsor in respect of a commercial partnership remain.
"On the basis of all the above, the offer was declined. Mr Chansiri has made clear the criteria for potential investors to follow, after which he would enter into further discussions."
The Sheffield outlet added that a locally-raised businessman named Adam Shaw was part of the bidding group. He has previously shown a public interest in buying the club.
The American consortium isn't the only interested party. Moroccan businessman Anas Sefrioui is casting an eye over the Owls, according to Alan Nixon. Turki Alalshikh, the Saudi billionaire and boxing kingpin, has been advised by former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan to take a look at the Hillsborough natives, as he is said to be keen on getting involved with English football.
It's not going to be easy for the supporters to get Chansiri out of the door. He has caused outrage on the terraces before and probably will again before he eventually hands the keys over to someone else.
Whenever that day comes, Wednesdayites will probably party on the streets, if Saturday's protest is anything to go by, but the mentality of 'anyone would be better than him' shouldn't exist here.
It's not a case like Reading where they are currently threatened with going under. Wednesday need to make sure that the right person, someone whose practices will be more aligned with what the fans want to see, comes in, and not just another Chansiri.
