Freiburg made an impressive start to life under Julian Schuster, winning five of their opening seven league games of the season. However, they have found wins much hard to come by in recent times, having won just one of their previous six Bundesliga matches. The Breisgau-Brasilianer have had to settle for draws in three of those matches, including a 1-1 scoreline in Sunday’s away clash with Hoffenheim. Matthias Ginter opened the scoring in the 68th minute, before Hoffenheim’s Tom Bischof restored parity to ensure Freiburg left the PreZero Arena with just a point to show for their efforts.

While they may not be in the best form, Freiburg remain firmly in the hunt for European qualification, sitting in seventh place and outside the top six on goal difference. In fact, the Breisgau-Brasilianer will move up to fifth spot and level on points with fourth-placed RB Leipzig if they claim all three points on Friday.

Freiburg can take confidence from the fact four of their six league victories have taken place at the Europa-Park Stadion. They are also looking to make it four consecutive home league games without defeat after collecting seven points from their last three top-flight home outings.

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh remains sidelined with a knee issue, while Florian Müller is still unavailable due to a concussion. Meanwhile, Junior Adamu will serve the final game of a three-match suspension.

Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg will carry significant momentum into Friday’s fixture after putting together a five-game winning run in all competitions. Die Wölfe recorded league wins over Heidenheim, Union Berlin and Leipzig, before they got the better of Hoffenheim in the DFB-Pokal. Their winning streak looked set to end when they went 3-2 down in Sunday’s home clash against Mainz. However, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side showed great character to stage a late turnaround at the Volkswagen Arena. Jonas Wind pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute, before he found the net again in stoppage time to snatch all three points.

That result also extended their unbeaten run to six Bundesliga matches, leaving them in fifth position and just three points adrift of the top four. Die Wölfe will be hoping to close that three-point gap on Friday as they look to replicate the 2-1 win they recorded in their most recent trip to the Europa-Park Stadion in April. On that occasion, Maximilian Arnold and Maxence Lacroix scored late goals to fire Wolfsburg to their first away win over Freiburg since April 2018.
