As we all know far too well, the PSR situation has been heavily restrictive of any transfer business that Newcastle United would like to conduct in recent times.
No first team squad signings made in January 2024.
Then United unable to spend big last summer (2024).
Newcastle United also failed to make any first team signings in January (2025), despite making two first team squad sales.
Given how difficult PSR/FFP makes it to invest as the club would like to, it’s worth having a look at some of the options that may be available as free agents at the end of the season.
Kyle Walker-Peters
With an ageing Kieran Trippier looking likely to exit in the summer, a new right-back to back up Tino Livramento is an absolute necessity, especially if we are once again in any European competition come next season.
Kyle Walker-Peters is one of the stronger members of Southampton’s mostly Championship level squad, with the 27 year old likely to be playing Premier League football next term, regardless of what fate awaits his current club. With 135 Premier League appearances to his name, as well as Champions League experience with Spurs, Newcastle could certainly do worse in finding full back cover.
Tyrick Mitchell
On the opposite side of defence, Lewis Hall also finds himself likely needing more cover, should he find himself injured or out of form, given Lloyd Kelly’s recent exit and Matt Targett likely to leave in the summer.
Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell would be a brilliant piece of business to fill that void.
A mainstay in the Palace defence over the last four seasons, Mitchell is a proven Premier League standard defender who many have claimed is worthy of an England call up. A move to Newcastle could be a very enticing step up for Mitchell, however, I doubt we’d be the only ones interested in his services come the summer.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Eddie Howe has had a claimed interest in Calvert Lewin for a number of years, with rumours suggesting he was involved in potential PSR swap deal talks between ourselves and Everton over the summer.
Many Newcastle fans have been sceptical when it comes to the prospect of signing Calvert-Lewin, particularly due to his less than favourable injury record, similar to current forward Callum Wilson.
However, Calvert-Lewin is four years Wilson’s junior and is also a proven Premier League goal scorer when fit and available. If his wage requests are not astronomical, signing him on a free would certainly be beneficial to our squad, especially given the lack of firepower on our bench at the moment.
Jonathan David
Canadian striker Jonathan David is certainly one of the most exiting free agents that is due to be available this summer, and there will likely be a large contingent of Premier League clubs vying for his signature.
His goal record in Ligue 1 is incredibly impressive, with 83 goals in the French top flight over the last five seasons. With eight goals already in the Champions League so far this term, he is truly beginning to cement himself on the big stage, which will only bring more eyes onto him come the summer.
Given David’s quality, he may not wish to contend with a striker of Alexander Isak’s quality for a place in the first eleven, especially if other clubs can guarantee him a starting spot. However, given Isak’s slightly shaky injury record as well as the prospect of European football next season, having a striker of David’s quality on our books would be incredibly assuring. He would certainly be breathing down Isak’s neck should our star strikers incredible form begin to slip.
With Malaga winger Antonio Cordero looking likely to join upon the expiry of his contract, it appears clear that Newcastle are already having a look at some of the players available as free agents this summer.
Given the recent loan with obligation to buy of Lloyd Kelly to Juventus, the Newcastle hierarchy might also be taking notice of free agents in terms of their sale potential, should the move not pan out in terms of regular football. In the modern PSR orientated market, free agents appear to be something of a win-win.
There are a multitude of other top talents available as free agents this summer, such as Leroy Sane and Jonathan Tah.
