Matches are coming thick and fast, with the midweek Carabao Cup clash followed by four league games over 14 days. Thomas Frank’s side are currently two points off sixth place and a home win against Nottingham Forest would bring a very Merry Christmas.
Brentford continued to show their attacking threat against Chelsea in Gameweek 16. Mads Roerslev’s (£4.3m) pullback led to a Mikkel Damsgaard (£5.0m) shot. That alongside a close-range Christian Nørgaard (£4.8m) volley and a low cross that led to Fábio Carvalho (£4.6m) hitting the crossbar, before Kevin Schade’s (£5.1m) overhead kick rebound landed on top of the net. All could have resulted in FPL hauls.
Bryan Mbeumo (£7.6m) continues his outstanding attacking from this season with his 10th goal of the campaign.
Mbeumo remains highly owned, however, the FPL managers who have sold the midfielder to free up money for other upgrades in recent weeks, are likely regretting it.
By scoring in successive matches, he’s reminded FPL managers that he is capable of netting against anyone. His 10 goals are bettered only by premium trio Erling Haaland (£14.9m), Mohamed Salah (£13.4m) and Cole Palmer (£11.2m). Whilst both he and fellow Bee Yoane Wissa (£6.2m) are league leaders for scoring at home.
What’s especially attractive to FPL managers is Mbeumo’s multiple routes to points. He is a threat from open play, and he also takes penalties and lots of set-pieces.
No FPL midfielder has played more minutes so far, so he’s also offering security in a notoriously uncertain Christmas factor.
Elsewhere, Ismaïla Sarr’s (£5.7m) assist and two goals versus Brighton awarded him the honour of Gameweek 16’s top scorer. He’s started eight successive matches for a Crystal Palace side that is seemingly turning a corner and has done enough to keep his place for their great-looking imminent fixture run.
There were 15 points for both Lewis Hall (£4.6m) and James Maddison (£7.6m). The latter narrowly pipped team-mate Heung-min Son (£9.8m) for points. The Spurs captain only needed 45 minutes to rack up 14 points.
Like Sarr, Amad Diallo (£5.2m) is another cheap midfielder making himself undroppable with recent form. By dramatically turning around the Manchester derby, he’s now up to one goal and six assists from his latest five league starts. No wonder he’s the Gameweek’s most-bought asset.
Meanwhile, Antonee Robinson’s (£4.8m) pair of Anfield assists were well-timed, as he’s the leading contender to replace suspended and most-sold Wolves defender Rayan Aït-Nouri (£4.8m).
Up at Newcastle, Hall and Alexander Isak (£8.7m) combined for a goal against Leicester and managers are hoping for a repeat when they visit Ipswich.
Surprisingly, heavyweights Palmer, Salah, Haaland and Bukayo Saka (£10.6m) could only muster one assist between them in Gameweek 16.
All go away from home this time, versus Everton, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace respectively. Perhaps Salah is the standout candidate ahead of visiting north London.
Otherwise, this weekend could be a good time to go alternative, such as Isak’s clash with Ipswich. The Swedish international has six goals, three assists and 59 points from eight matches.
