Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports.
The former top referee has now given his call on these incidents in the Newcastle v Leicester match.
Dermot Gallagher looking at what happened during key moments in this very eventful game at St James’ Park.
A match where Newcastle United dominated and the four goal winning scoreline was the least NUFC deserved.
Bruno Guimaraes goes down in the penalty area, following a challenge by Jannik Vestergaard. Bruno claiming a penalty, Leicester wanting a booking for a supposed dive. Neither team getting what they wanted from the referee and/or VAR.
Dermot Gallagher verdict:
“The referee gives a free-kick and if you watch it, there is physical contact.
“What referees are looking for, to give a booking for simulation, is no physical contact.
“If you watch what happens, the referee actually gives a free-kick for handball, not for a dive.
“There is physical contact.
“It is not a penalty in his opinion, it is handball and not every handball is a yellow card.”
Incident:
Bruno Guimaraes puts in a challenge on Stephy Mavididi. The Newcastle player getting a yellow card, Leicester wanting a red.
Dermot Gallagher verdict:
“I think it is a yellow.
“I think it is yellow because Guimaraes is set, his position is set, he is reaching [with his boot].
“He is almost flicking out for the ball.
“He doesn’t plant his studs.
“He can’t gather any momentum.
“So it is not as forceful as you [might] think.
“It’s not a nice tackle but it’s not a red card for me.”
