Over the past few years, Liverpool and Real Madrid have developed the most intense rivalry in European football.

And it is unfortunate to say that Real Madrid are the ones winning it. If this was a boxing match, they would have won every single round.

The beat Liverpool in both the 2017-18 and 2021-22 Champions League finals, as well as knocking Liverpool out of the competition at earlier stages in 2021-21 and 2022-23.

And with the ongoing rumours that Real would be frontrunners if Trent Alexander-Arnold were to decide against a new contract with the club before the end of the season, the Spanish giants could be set to score another victory over the Reds.

But not all is lost. Los Blancos will visit Anfield again in late November, with their younger, Nuevos Galacticos side already facing a bit of strife. Barcelona have taken an early lead over them in La Liga and their last Champions League action saw them outclassed with a 1-0 loss to Lille.

With Arne Slot’s men surging currently - with nine wins in 10 games in all competitions - now would be the perfect time to deliver a huge counter-punch.

Liverpool right-back gets new role

And now a former Liverpool man is infiltrating their coaching unit, with Spanish outlet Marca reporting that Alvaro Arbeloa is set to take over their reserve side, Real Madrid Castilla, at the end of the season.

Castilla are currently headed up by football legend Raúl, who is aiming to move up in rank to either a coaching spot in the first-team or a directorial role in the youth side. This paves the way for Arbeloa to take his spot, as has already been agreed.

Arbeloa currently heads up the Real Madrid Juvenil A team, the under-19 side who will be playing Liverpool’s under-19s in the UEFA Youth League in November also. This return to Merseyside will come 15 years after the Spaniard departed to rejoin Real.

Arbeloa spent two-and-a-half seasons at Anfield between 2007-2009, making his first start against Barcelona in the Champions League and being tasked to mark a 19-year old Lionel Messi in a 2-1 victory.

Arbeloa’s side have got off to a hot-and-cold start, beating Stuttgart 1-0 but falling to the same fate the first team did against Lille, being defeated 2-1. With Liverpool winning their opening two games, Arbeloa will be under pressure when he faces Rio Ngumoha and company.
