Celtic confirmed the signing of Kieran Tierney on Tuesday, with the Arsenal left-back signing a five-year deal back with the Scottish Premiership side.

Tierney is out of contract at the end of June, at which point he would have been a free agent. But Celtic have swooped to snap him up as soon as that Arsenal deal expires.

It will be Tierney’s second spell with Celtic, with the 28-year-old having played for the club and their academy sides for 14 years before joining Arsenal.

Admittedly, Tuesday’s announcement didn’t exactly come as a shock to anyone. It’s been public knowledge for a while that Tierney would be returning to his old team. All the same, he insisted it’s good to be back.

“Everybody’s known for a few months and just to be here with the Celtic strip on again just feels amazing,” Tierney said.

“I spoke with the manager, and obviously I had worked with him before and I’ve always kept in touch with him. He’s one of the best so I’m so lucky and grateful that he’s given me the chance to come back again.

“My ambition is just for Celtic to be as successful as possible, retain our place at the top and continue to win trophies and do well for Celtic.”

Tierney made 144 appearances for Arsenal, scoring six goals and assisting a further 14. The left-back won the FA Cup with the Gunners in 2020, and he made five appearances in this season’s run to the Champions League semi-finals.

The Scotland international signed off with a goal against Southampton on the final day of the Premier League campaign, helping Arsenal to one last win.
