Former Chelsea player Paul Parker believes Enzo Maresca must guide Chelsea to Conference League glory if he’s to avoid questions being asked about his future.

Chelsea take on Real Betis on Wednesday night in Poland looking to follow up Champions League qualification by lifting their first piece of silverware under the new ownership.

A win would see the Blues become the first club side to win all three major European honours, and it could act as a catalyst for this squad to go onto bigger things.

Parker believes Maresca must deliver Conference League glory

Maresca has faced a lot of criticism this season especially for his style of football, but he hit back at those critics after the Nottingham Forest win

It was vital for Chelsea and Maresca to get into the Champions League, and the Conference League would cap off a successful season for the Blues in terms of getting back to where they need to be.

However, former Blue Parker has warned questions could be asked of Maresca if he fails to deliver the trophy on Wednesday night.

“[Losing] certainly won’t help with the way a lot of the fans feel about him. He definitely needs this and he wants it badly,” he told Sports Mole.

“He desperately needs to win that trophy. Even the most hardened Chelsea fan, who mostly thinks it’s not a big trophy, would say they want it because if you’re a club like how Chelsea perceive themselves, everything that’s in front of you, you want to win.”

Chelsea face tough Real Betis test

Chelsea are likely to be considered favourites, but will face their toughest game of the competition against their La Liga counterparts.

Maresca isn’t happy Real Betis had 48 hours extra to prepare for the game, but how much difference that actually makes is impossible to quantify.
