Dominique Janssen, a key player in Arsenal Women’s 2018-19 FA Women’s Super League title victory, is returning to England after a five-year stint with German champions VfL Wolfsburg.

The Dutch international defender’s move to Manchester United was confirmed by the BBC on Saturday, though an official announcement from the club is still pending.

Janssen initially joined Wolfsburg in 2019, following a successful four-year spell at Arsenal where she won the FA Cup, the FA WSL Cup twice, and the aforementioned league title. Her tenure at Wolfsburg was equally decorated, with three Frauen Bundesliga titles and three DFB Pokals to her name.

This transfer marks a significant move for both Janssen and Manchester United. For Janssen, it’s a return to familiar territory, the league where she established herself as a top defender.

For Manchester United, it’s a strategic acquisition aimed at strengthening their defence after a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Women’s Super League last season.

Wolfsburg has already secured a replacement for Janssen in her compatriot Caitlin Dijkstra, who was signed last summer and played for Twente Enschede on loan last season.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have said goodbye to Mary Earps, who will join PSG after being denied a move to Arsenal. Katie Zelem has also left at the end of her contract, saying goodbye to fans of the club she has supported since she was a child on Thursday.
