With five wins in their last five Bundesliga games, Borussia Dortmund saved what looked like a disappointing season by leapfrogging Freiburg into fourth place and securing Champions League qualification.

The Black and Yellows now aim to carry that momentum into the Club World Cup in the United States, where they face Brazilian side Fluminense in their opener at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on Tuesday at 18:00 CET.

Dortmund managed to finalize the signing of 19-year-old Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland just in time for him to be included in their Club World Cup squad, with fans eagerly anticipating his debut.

Despite heavy speculation over his future with BVB, Jamie Gittens was also included in Dortmund’s squad after the club rejected two bids from Chelsea ahead of the tournament.

Captain Emre Can and Salih Özcan, on the other hand, will miss out due to injury alongside long-term injured key defender Nico Schlotterbeck.

Fluminense reached the final of the Club World Cup in 2023, where they were defeated 4-0 by Manchester City.

That appearance followed their first-ever Copa Libertadores triumph, but they were unable to defend the title and missed out on qualifying for the 2025 edition.

They do enter this year’s tournament in strong form, though, having won their last four matches across all competitions. Currently sitting fifth in the Brazilian Serie A, the club will be eager to make an impact on the global stage.

Fluminense's squad features a very familiar face to European football fans: veteran defender Thiago Silva. At 40 years old, the former Chelsea star remains an important player and is fully expected to start in the opener against Borussia Dortmund.
