Flamengo turmoil sparks big Pedro question

Tension has surfaced within Flamengo’s hierarchy over public speculation about Pedro’s future, following a comment from a club official regarding the attacker’s potential sale price, according to Globo. President Luiz Eduardo Baptista—known as Bap—was notably displeased after it emerged that a member of the football department told journalist Mauro Cezar Pereira that Flamengo would accept €15 million (about R$95 million) for Pedro. This unvetted remark created discomfort not just for Bap, but also for head coach Filipe Luís.

The club quickly identified the official involved in this communication and is handling the matter internally. From the board’s perspective, the conversation was informal but demonstrated a lack of caution, leading to unwanted exposure for both Flamengo and the player. In response, Flamengo released a formal statement on Wednesday asserting that "there is no intention to negotiate the departure of Pedro," aiming to ease tensions internally and defend the striker amidst the swirling rumors.

Bap made clear within the club that he had not authorized any discussions concerning Pedro’s sale since he took office. He emphasized that, among the current starters, only the right back Wesley is formally listed as available for transfer—with negotiations considered only from €30 million upward. As a result, the suggestion that Pedro could leave for half that sum was met with internal criticism.

Pedro himself was caught off guard by the news, though he has communicated his desire to renew his contract. His representatives opened discussions earlier in the year before a knee injury sidelined him, but the talks have not advanced since his return in April. Pedro’s current contract runs until the end of 2027.

Since coming back from a significant injury, Pedro’s position in the squad has become less defined. Although he was a regular starter last year and has been capped by Brazil in 2024, his involvement has diminished: since April, he’s featured in 17 of Flamengo’s 20 matches, starting just eight times, and registering five goals with three assists.

The technical staff believes Pedro was given fair opportunities but, due to the team’s need to gain ground in the league and compete decisively in continental tournaments, minutes were prioritized for other forwards. Filipe Luís has spoken about tailoring the team’s approach to Pedro’s strengths but, given the high pressing demands and tactical complexity, adjustments have not materialized. There’s also a recognition that fielding both Pedro and Arrascaeta together is tactically challenging for Flamengo’s current style.

Flamengo’s squad has been granted a break after traveling to the United States, but when players return to training, further conversations are expected between the coaching staff, board, and Pedro to reaffirm his role and the club’s backing.
