This Premier League season has seen many players make a significant step up to help their clubs in their respective goals.
Here are five underrated players who arguably deserve more credit than they have received this season…
For a long time there has been talk of Newcastle needing a new right-winger but those calls have quietened of late given the outstanding season Jacob Murphy has had.
At one point it looked as though his Newcastle career might be over but he has become a crucial player under Eddie Howe and has been key to the Magpies’ push for Champions League qualification, and their EFL Cup win. They face a huge end of season run in to get there but they rank among the favourites to qualify on betting sites.
He has scored eight goals and set up 11 in the Premier League this campaign and has formed a deadly partnership with one of Europe’s most in form strikers in Alexander Isak. He has been a big reason why the Swede has been so devastating, providing him with consistently good service and could even be in with a shout of an England call up.
The Aston Villa defender has started to get more plaudits after establishing himself with England but is still perhaps not as appreciated as he should be by the wider football fanbase. Konsa has grown to become one of the league’s top central defenders and has again been fantastic for Villa this season.
It might not end with the return to the Champions League that the club are hoping for this season but it’s still been a positive campaign for the club and Konsa is a key reason behind that, playing an outstanding 47 games in all competitions and proving to be a rock at the back.
Once a hot prospect at Arsenal, Iwobi has found a home at Fulham after leaving Everton and is playing probably the best football of his career. He has been superb for the Whites and one of their most important players, playing 41 times across all competitions, scoring nine goals. Fulham are still in with a good chance of qualifying for Europe and if they do, Iwobi must take enormous plaudits for his role in that.
Wolves, and Strand Larsen too, have had their struggles this season but it is the striker’s form which has been so instrumental in dragging his side away from relegation trouble and towards mid-table security. His first season in the top flight, the Norwegian has now scored 13 league goals, one more than the extremely highly rated Liam Delap has. He is still only 25 and has potential to be a top striker for years to come.
Another player who has arguably flown under the radar this season is Brentford’s Danish midfielder Damsgaard. He became known to English football fans when he scored a stunning free-kick in the Euro 2020 semi-final but had a torrid time with injury in the years that followed.
But now playing regularly under fellow Dane Thomas Frank, he has shown what he is capable of. He is still only 24 and has been one of the best creators in the league this season, setting up 10 Premier League goals.
