Another week of Bundesliga football brings with it another Bundesliga record for FC Augsburg. After FCA attacking midfielder Alexis Claude Maurice became the first Fuggerstädter to score a flawless hat trick in the German top flight last matchday, keeper Finn Dahmen reached a special milestone.
Dahmen kept his fourth consecutive clean sheet in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with SC Freiburg, in the process eclipsing Marwin Hitz’s record of 399 top-flight minutes without conceding a goal for Augsburg. Hitz, who later moved on to Dortmund and back to Basel in his native Switzerland, set the record back in 2016.
Dahmen’s inspiring redemption arc continues. The eight-times-capped Germany U21 international began the season injured and lost his starting place to Croatian international Nediljko Labrović. The 26-year-old nevertheless did not give up.
Dahmen then made his presence felt with two strong Pokal appearances against Schalke 04 and the Karlsruher SC, eventually taking over for Labrović in the league on the first matchday (16) of the new 2025 calendar year. Since then, he’s played like a man possessed.
Counting the Pokal win over Schalke, Dahmen has kept eight clean sheets in 11 appearances across all competitions this year. He’s only conceded two league goals (one apiece) in league starts against Heidenheim and FC St. Pauli. He helped Augsburg advance over the KSC in the cup on penalties.
A heavily capped German youth international, Dahmen may very well receive a call from Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann in the forthcoming international break. He earned his latest clean sheet with an outstanding save on Freiburg’s Niklas Beste in the 63rd minute of Sunday’s draw.
Both Augsburg head coach Jess Thorup and his Freiburg counterpart Julian Schuster lauded Dahmen’s “outstanding save” against Beste at the post-match press conference. The two men could do nothing but take turns tipping their respective caps.
Dahmen kept it modest when speaking to DAZN.
“That’s a cool thing,” Dahmen said when informed about the record. “A nice bonus, but I would have preferred to win. Something like that is not one of my main goals, it’s always about the team success. It was also Freiburg’s only big chance.”
