Manchester United’s tumultuous form can be put down to a multitude of reasons on and off the pitch, but some players undoubtedly have more to answer for than others.
Last night, Rasmus Hojlund marked yet another blank, uneventful appearance after being given the nod by Ruben Amorim to lead the line at Craven Cottage.
The centre-forward has only two Premier League goals to his name this season in 1,096 minutes worth of action. He was unable to add to his tally yet again in West London, with United only clinching the win late on via a deflected strike from Lisandro Martinez, who’s now level on goals with his attacking teammate.
As well as that, Hojlund lost possession 11 times in total during his 58 minutes on the pitch. He took 20 touches, won only two of his five ground duels attempted and didn’t win any of his five aerial duels attempted. Yet, perhaps the most damning stat to encapsulate his troublesome United tenure thus far is that he has now failed to score in 36 of his 48 top-flight appearances.

When the sides entered the interval tied at 0-0, Rio Ferdinand suggested Hojlund would’ve been on the receiving end of some criticism from his teammates in the dressing room. He told the TNT Sports panel: “I’d be surprised if he’s not getting a few fingers pointed at him in the changing room at half-time.
“Hold the ball, keep the ball, you’re the platform for us to get up the pitch, and I think far too many times he’s too loose in those situations. The amount of turnovers he’s had today, as I said, I’d be surprised if players [haven’t had a word with him].
“Slack and loose in possession giving it away, and Man United can’t get out and get any good possession in and around the final third when your No.9 isn’t able to hold the ball up.”
What’s more, ESPN journalist Mark Ogden categorised the Dane and his struggling counterpart Joshua Zirkzee (three league goals in 23 matches) as Ruben Amorim’s ‘biggest problem’.
He wrote on X/Twitter after the dull affair: “Ruben Amorim’s biggest problem is that his choice of centre-forwards is one of Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee. It’s like being given a car with no wheels. Neither has scored a goal in 2025 or looked like doing so.”
