FIFA's firmly rejected suggestions from major clubs like Real Madrid and other European & South American giants to host the Club World cup every two years citing scheduling issues and financial impracticality.

What’s the Idea?

According to ESPN, several club officials discussed the proposal informally with FIFA representatives during the recent expanded Club World cup held in the United States.

While no official requests have been submitted, top clubs believe biennial format could boost revenues significantly.

FIFA Stands Firm

Despite being pleased with the success of the new 32 team format, FIFA considers biennial Club World cup unfeasible at this stage. The next edition's set for 2029 with Qatar emerging as strong candidate to host.

Money Talks , But So Do Calendars

FIFA distributed nearly 1 billion dollar among the participating clubs in the latest tournament. Yet sources stress that repeating such payouts every 2 year would be unrealistic. For instance:

  • Real Madrid, semifinalists, earned 82.5 million dollar
  • Chelsea, the champions, collected 114.6 million dollar

But FIFA believes biennial format risks clashing with UEFA’s calendar and could overcrowd already packed football schedule.

Opposition Mounts

  1. Former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti told Il Giornale that "Real Madrid won’t take part in the revamped tournament" if compensation remains low.
  2. La Liga president Javier Tebas also slammed the expanded format calling it "threat" to domestic competitions.
