FC Barcelona’s pursuit of Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyökeres could put a spanner in the works for Manchester United.
The Red Devils continue to struggle for goals as they could only convert one of their chances in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford.
It means they have now only scored nine goals in ten Premier League games, scarcely believable for a club the size of United.
Therefore, one of incoming coach Ruben Amorim’s biggest tasks will be getting a tune out of his new side’s attackers and it has been reported that he might turn to one of his current players at Sporting Lisbon.
The former Coventry City striker has been in sensational form for Amorim, having already smashed in 20 goals this season in just 16 appearances. This is no fluke as he banged in 43 the season before.
The Swede has already opened up on potential rumours of a move by claiming he is happy at Sporting but doesn’t know what the future holds for him.
Portuguese paper A Bola (via Fichajes.com) report that United could have some serious opposition from Spain, in the form of Barcelona.
Barca are said to be keen to identify “the heir to the eternal Robert Lewandowski” and that the Swedish striker is certainly an intriguing prospect to fill this role.
“With a release clause of €100 million, his team would be open to negotiating his transfer for €60-70 million” but Barcelona also hold another ace up their sleeve to reduce the price further.
“The tactic would involve including Vitor Roque (19 years old), who plays on loan at Real Betis, in the offer to convince the Lisbon club for their killer.”
United would certainly find it hard to compete with Barcelona for the player’s signature due to the fine form they are in, especially in comparison to the situation the Red Devils currently find themselves.
Nonetheless, the summer is very far away and many things can change in that time. What’s more, the imminent arrival of Ruben Amorim will undoubtedly be a huge selling point for Gyokeres to consider as he will undoubtedly be attracted to link up with a man who helped convert him from a Championship striker to one of the most lethal in all of the continent.
