The scenario: Borussia Dortmund qualified for the Round of 16 as winners of Group F with victories over Ulsan HD (1-0) and Mamelodi Sundowns (4-3) and a 0-0 draw against Fluminense FC. CF Monterrey also remain unbeaten: two draws against Inter Milan (1-1) and River Plate (0-0) were followed by a 4-0 win against Urawa Reds, putting them in second place in Group E behind Inter.
Honours: The club from northern Mexico (150 km from the US border) have won the national title five times and the cup twice. In 1992, Monterrey won the Continental Cup Winners' title (comparable to the European Cup Winners' Cup) and, between 2011 and 2021, won the CONCACAF Champions League, the continental tournament for club teams in North and Central America and the Caribbean, five times.
Team comparison: Borussia Dortmund have had more shots on goal (14.3 on average per game) than CF Monterrey (10.7) during the tournament. Although the number of goals scored per game (1.7) is the same, the quality of Dortmund's chances has been significantly higher: 1.7 xGoals per game for BVB compared to only 1.1 per game for the Mexicans. Monterrey have the better defensive record thus far however: although the Black & Yellows have conceded just 33 shots on goal compared to their opponents' 43, BVB have let in three goals (all in the match against Sundowns), while Monterrey have conceded just once. The team are strong in tackles (winning an average of 50.3%, BVB only 46%) and are effective at taking the sting out of games in possession. The team led by 39-year-old Sergio Ramos (formerly Real Madrid, pictured here in 2017 going up against Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang) have enjoyed 52.7% possession on average. Borussia's figure is 51.7%.
