Tottenham’s transfer plans remain active with one week left before the summer window closes, and Piero Hincapie continues to be strongly linked with a move to north London. Spurs are determined to strengthen their squad and have identified two priorities: a creative number 10 and a new senior centre-back to provide depth and quality.
So far, Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha have been the major signings for Thomas Frank, alongside the addition of 20-year-old Japanese defender Koto Takai from Kawasaki Frontale. Yet the search for defensive reinforcement continues, with injuries from last season fresh in the mind.
Hincapie, 23, has built a strong reputation during his four seasons at Bayer Leverkusen. The Ecuadorian international, comfortable as a left-sided centre-back or at left-back, is seen as an ideal fit for Spurs. According to Fabrizio Romano, the player is keen on leaving Leverkusen before the window shuts on September 1 at 7pm. “Premier League clubs attentive after Tottenham made an enquiry 10 days ago,” Romano reported on social media.
Hincapie’s contract reportedly includes a €60million (£52million) release clause, a significant figure that reflects his growing stature in European football.
Frank can currently call on Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Radu Dragusin and Kevin Danso, while Ben Davies offers further cover. Despite this depth, last season’s injury crisis remains a warning. Spurs do not want to risk a repeat in the 2024/25 campaign, especially after starting the season with two clean sheets against Burnley and Manchester City.
Following the impressive 2-0 win over City, Frank acknowledged that Tottenham could still act in the market. He said: “Yeah, I think it’s extremely important that, a couple of things that we understand we have a good group of players, a talented group players, a group of good quality players that I’m very pleased with. So that’s why we brought in two good players to help. Can we improve it? Perfect. If we can’t, you know, then we have very good players and we just showed that today, so yeah, very happy with that.”
The coming days will be decisive, and Spurs fans will watch closely to see if Hincapie becomes the latest arrival to bolster Frank’s ambitious plans.
