Manchester United have reached an agreement with Tom Heaton over the terms of a new one-year deal, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

Throughout, the expectation was that Heaton would leave United at the end of the just-concluded 2024/25 campaign alongside the likes of Jonny Evans, Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof.

There were even suggestions that Heaton and Evans would retire and potentially offered coaching roles at Old Trafford.

However, while Evans hung up his boots, it emerged that United were keen on keeping Heaton, with the club’s goalkeeping department likely to be subjected to a radical overhaul this summer, amidst uncertainty over the futures of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

Last week, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United and Heaton had reached a verbal agreement over a new contract.

Now, Romano has confirmed that a full agreement is in place and Heaton will stay at the club for at least one more year.

The Italian journalist wrote on X, “Excl: Manchester United agree new deal for 3rd goalkeeper Tom Heaton staying at the club until June 2026.”

“Decision shared with Rúben Amorim and approved by the coaching staff.”

“Official soon.”

Heaton came through the ranks at United before he permanently left for Cardiff City in 2010.

The Englishman went on to play for Bristol City, Burnley and Aston Villa he returned to United for a second stint at the club in the summer of 2021.

Since he came back, Heaton has primarily been United’s third-choice goalkeeper and has only made three competitive appearances.

The veteran shot-stopper has not lined up for the Red Devils since February 2023, when he played in an EFL Cup semi-final tie against Nottingham Forest.
