Fabrizio Romano confirms Florian Wirtz reports were WRONG | OneFootball

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed some facts about Florian Wirtz's move to Liverpool. Initial reports were wide of the mark.

Liverpool will complete a deal for Florian Wirtz within the next 48 hours. That much seems absolutely clear.

The Reds have stormed to the front of the queue for the German playmaker, despite no one really giving them a chance a month ago. Wirtz was destined for Bayern Munich, unless Manchester City made a mega-money bid.

And yet it's Liverpool who have made the latter happen. They're set to smash their transfer record to sign Wirtz, while there's potential here for the British transfer record to go, too.

However, it's also true that Liverpool aren't spending quite as much here as people think. Initial reports were off - as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.

Florian Wirtz's wages

It was reported last week by Sky Germany that Wirtz would earn around £300k per week before bonuses at Anfield. A massive wage for a huge talent, it seemed.

Now, Anfield Watch said at the time that we weren't certain on that figure. We'd heard it was closer to £180k per week before bonuses.

Now Romano has weighed in on the money being spent here. He claims 'in the region of £200k per week plus bonuses'.

He also makes a point to mention that previous reports suggesting a higher wage are 'not confirmed' as it wouldn't fit Liverpool's wage structure. That structure is about heavily incentivised contracts that reward performances, rather than a massive starting salary.

Liverpool, then, aren't quite spending the massive amount initially suggested. In fact, they're getting a very good deal on Wirtz - we imagined he would get around £300k per week given the club needed to see off other clubs.

Per Capology, this initial wage wouldn't actually place Wirtz in the top 20 for the Premier League. He'll earn roughly what Wesley Fofana does at Chelsea and less than Raheem Sterling.
