FA launches probe into fresh match-fixing allegations levelled against Premier League referee David Coote | OneFootball

The Football Association (FA) has launched an urgent investigation into serious allegations made against Premier League referee David Coote.

The Sun claims Coote allegedly discussed a yellow card with a friend before a match between Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion in October 2019.

According to the report, Coote messaged a friend saying, “I hope you backed as discussed,” after booking Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski during the game. The referee has denied any wrongdoing, claiming the conversation was merely banter.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for match officials in England, has adopted a zero-tolerance approach to such allegations.

A spokesperson for the PGMOL stated: “The facts need to be established in light of these very serious allegations.”

Coote is currently suspended by the PGMOL due to a separate incident involving a foul-mouthed tirade against former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The FA’s investigation into the match-fixing allegations will be conducted independently.

There have also been damning videos of the embattled Premier League referee snorting a suspicious white substance, which went viral.

Punishment must be swift

If these allegations are proven true, the punishment for Coote must be swift and severe. Such actions constitute a grave breach of trust and a serious threat to the integrity of the sport.

The FA and PGMOL must send a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated. A thorough investigation must be conducted, followed by appropriate disciplinary action.

They must also set up a comprehensive review of all Premier League referees to ensure the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
