African clubs failed to reach the Round of 16 at the 2025 Club World Cup currently taking place in the United States.

To assess Africa's participation in the Club World Cup, Foot Africa reached out to Cameroonian journalist William Mfabo, who kindly answered the following question: Could African clubs have done better at the Club World Cup?

I think African clubs performed admirably in this tournament. We didn't expect them to go further than this, but we still saw a real surge of pride from the various teams present at this global competition.Mamelodi Sundowns scored a fair number of goals against top-tier teams like Dortmund, which proves they were far from outclassed. There were even matches where players stood out as MVPs (best players of the match), such as Ikram Reynes (Mamelodi Sundowns) and Youcef Belaili (Espérance de Tunis). As for Al Ahly of Egypt, they exited the tournament with heads held high, having seriously troubled a prestigious club like FC Porto and nearly achieved a historic first victory over a European team at the Club World Cup.Espérance de Tunis played an excellent tournament, notably thanks to their Algerian livewire who dazzled with exceptional technique and the ability to beat his direct opponents. Finally, Wydad did not look out of place, especially considering they landed in a very tough group featuring Manchester City and Juventus. The Moroccan club showed tremendous courage and made life difficult for their opponents.

Despite their determination, Espérance de Tunis, Al Ahly, Wydad, and Mamelodi Sundowns all exited the competition at the group stage.
