It has been reported by The Star that the forward is being sought by a number of clubs, including MK Dons and Blackpool.

The 33-year-old has a contract with the Owls until next summer, having recently had his deal extended by an extra 12 months.

There is currently speculation surrounding much of the first team squad at the Yorkshire outfit due to financial issues, which could open the door for Smith’s exit.

Hendrie believes that Smith would be a real coup for any of the clubs linked with the forward this summer, claiming that he is proven at a Championship level.

But he thinks Wrexham in particular could be a great landing spot with a lot of potential given the upwards trajectory the Red Dragons are currently on after earning promotion to the Championship.

“The situation with Michael Smith, I think he’d be a really good signing for both of these football clubs,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.

“I think Wrexham and MK Dons, and certainly for MK Dons, you do feel that it would be a big coup for them.

“I think for Wrexham, they have to establish and bring players in that can play at a Championship level, and he definitely can, so either of these football clubs would be fantastic.

“My obvious choice for Michael Smith would probably be Wrexham, with the way the football club’s going.

“You feel that that’d be one thing that would definitely give him a big opportunity.”

Smith featured 41 times in the Championship for Sheffield Wednesday last season, contributing eight goals and four assists as the team finished 12th in the table.

Sheffield Wednesday could be forced into Michael Smith sale

Sheffield Wednesday have recently sold Djeidi Gassama to Rangers at a cut rate price, with the forward going for way less than might be typically expected (£2.2 million).

The Owls could be forced into a similar situation with Smith given their current financial issues.

That would open the door for Wrexham to be able to sign a Championship calibre forward at a relatively low cost.

While the Welsh outfit should be wary of adding another player at the tail end of their careers to Phil Parkinson’s squad, this could be a signing that helps the club establish themselves at a Championship level.
