Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on Tom Cleverley potentially taking charge at Plymouth Argyle
Lee Hendrie has claimed that Tom Cleverley would be a great appointment at Plymouth Argyle following his Watford exit.
It was reported earlier this month by Anthony Joseph that the 35-year-old is one of four men in line to potentially take over at Home Park for next season.
Cleverley spent last season in charge of his former club Watford, leading them to a 14th place finish before being dismissed.
Plymouth will be looking to appoint someone capable of guiding them to promotion back to the Championship next season after the Pilgrims finished 23rd in the table under Miron Muslic.
Hendrie believes that Cleverley could have gone on to push Watford forward, had he not been sacked at the end of the campaign.
He believes that it would be a step down to take over at Plymouth, but that it would be a real coup for the Devon outfit if they could bring him in.
“I do think he would be a good appointment,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“I just think that Tom’s, for me, had that experience this season of being around the Watford team, where it was a decent squad and I think he had a decent season.
“I think he probably could’ve pushed on and done better things at Watford.
“But I think that 100 per cent that, if Plymouth are linked with him and he does take that job, it’s obviously a step down but it would be a great coup for the football club.”
Cleverley oversaw one full season in charge of Watford before being dismissed in May.
During his time in charge, he oversaw 58 games, with the team winning on 20 occasions.
The Hornets earned a 14th place finish despite many tipping them for a relegation battle prior to the campaign getting underway.
Cleverley is reportedly one of four names being interviewed about the position at Plymouth, with Jack Wilshere, Ian Evatt and Des Buckingham have also been mentioned, although Evatt is now no longer under consideration.
Cleverley did an acceptable job at Watford last season, and had them competing to a solid standard despite low expectations.
His dismissal was on the harsher side, even if that’s to be expected from the Hornets, so bringing him at Plymouth could be a great appointment.
Bringing in any new manager is inherently a risk, but Cleverley showed he’s more than capable of coaching at a Championship level last year.
